Phase 1: IDEATE → Validate the Problem (1–2 Weeks)
🎯 Objective
Prove that a painful, urgent problem exists—and that people are willing to pay to solve it. No guesses. No “I think.” Just evidence.
If you can’t show proof of problem + price acceptance, you do not move forward.
🛠️ Activities
- Conduct 15–20 Problem Interviews (no pitching)
- Speak directly with people in your chosen ICP.
- Goal: uncover pain, current hacks, urgency triggers, and decision criteria.
- Ask: “What happens if this problem isn’t solved in the next 30 days?”
- Capture quotes verbatim.
- Competitive Teardown
- Identify top 5 existing solutions (competitors, workarounds, substitutes).
- Map: what they solve well, where they fail, what customers complain about.
- Look for gaps: slow, expensive, clunky, unreliable, confusing, untrustworthy.
- Draft Your Minimum Awesome Offer (MAO)
- Define the outcome: what result do customers get?
- Timeline: how fast can you deliver it?
- Price anchor: a believable, value-based price point.
- Proof: why should they believe you? (case, credentials, guarantee).
- Run Price & Offer Tests
- Ask value-anchored willingness-to-pay questions:
“If this solved X in 7 days, would it be worth $___?” - Float 1–2 concierge trial quotes to warm leads.
- Look for real buying signals: “When can we start?” not just “Sounds good.”
- Ask value-anchored willingness-to-pay questions:
📄 Deliverables
- ICP Card (one page)
- Who they are, where they hang out, what triggers the problem, what kills deals.
- Who they are, where they hang out, what triggers the problem, what kills deals.
- Problem Evidence Log
- Spreadsheet or doc capturing quotes + frequency of problems mentioned.
- Highlight top 2–3 pains mentioned in ≥70% of interviews.
- Offer Canvas
- Promise (outcome)
- Mechanism (how you deliver it)
- Scope boundaries (what’s in / what’s out)
- Price range (good/better/best or flat fee)
- Proof elements
- Simple Unit Economics Sketch
- Cost of Goods/Time per delivery
- Target margin (≥60% services, ≥70% productized)
📊 KPIs (Pass Targets)
- ≥70% of interviews confirm the same top problem with urgency (timed consequence, not “someday”).
- ≥5 strong buying signals (LOIs, paid pilot interest, pre-order at target price).
- Price acceptance within ±20% of your MAO anchor.
🚦 Gate 1 (Go/Pivot/Kill)
- ✅ Go: All KPIs hit → move to Phase 2 (Ignite).
- 🔄 Pivot: ICP/problem misaligned, urgency weak, or price rejected. Adjust and re-run.
- ❌ Kill: After 20 interviews, no LOIs or pilot interest → shut it down. Better to stop now than build something nobody wants.
🔑 Why This Matters
- Customer voices > founder intuition. Stop guessing—collect evidence.
- Competition clarifies positioning. Gaps show where you can win.
- Cash validation > compliments. “Sounds great” doesn’t pay bills.
- Unit economics protect you early. A bad margin can’t be fixed later.
🧩 Alignment Notes
- CORE5: Seeds Marketing (ICP + messaging) and Finance (pricing, early economics).
- 4 C’s Unified:
- Clarity → Who is the ICP and what hurts?
- Connection → Interviews create relationships.
- Confidence → Evidence log, quotes, and LOIs build trust.
- Cash → Real buying signals at target price.
